Energy Synapse has been engaged by the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) to help characterise the availability and key features of demand response in the National Electricity Market (NEM) across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors.
As part of this engagement, Energy Synapse has undertaken the following:
(a) Assessment of the potential demand flexibility in the NEM by analysing the data in AEMO’s Demand Side Participation Information (DSPI) portal.
(b) Stakeholder consultation process with electricity retailers and aggregators to gain a first-hand account of how demand response is being implemented in the NEM.
(c) Analysis of historical pricing and generator bidding data to qualitatively assess the potential of demand response to impact market price outcomes.
This report has been used by the AEMC, AEMO, and Energy Security Board to inform the
January 2021 directions paper for the post 2025 market design project, and in particular, the workstreams related to two-sided and ahead markets. The full Energy Synapse report is available to download for free.
Our Managing Director, Marija Petkovic, spoke on ABC News Radio about the implications of the directions paper for energy policy, investment, and reliability. Listen to it
