Develop your team withNEM and BESS Training
Energy Synapse designs and delivers practical training courses on “Electricity Industry Fundamentals” and “Commercial Opportunities for Battery Storage in the NEM”. Our courses are written from the inside and built on the same modelling and analysis we do every day for renewable and storage developers, investors and government/regulatory bodies.
We deliver these courses in partnership with Informa Connect Academy, in person in Sydney and Melbourne and live online. The curriculum is fully designed by Energy Synapse and our partner Informa manages bookings and event logistics.
Why train with Energy Synapse
Our courses are designed 100% by Energy Synapse. That authorship is the difference:
- Taught by Marija Petkovic. Your instructor is the founder of Energy Synapse and one of Australia’s most recognised voices on the NEM. Marija has more than 15 years of experience in energy markets across Australia, New Zealand and the United States and regularly appears in national media on energy market issues. You learn how the market behaves in practice, from someone who works in it daily.
- Current with a fast-moving market. The NEM is changing quickly, and the courses keep pace covering live developments such as the Electricity Services Entry Mechanism (ESEM), Renewable Energy Zones, LTESAs, longer-duration batteries, negative pricing and hybrid configurations. You will leave with an up-to-date understanding of the market.
- Strategic, not theoretical. You will gain a strategic understanding of how the NEM works, where the energy transition is heading, and what that means for the decisions you face. Our courses are grounded in the commercial and technical reality from advising energy companies and government every day.
Professionals from these organisations have attended our courses: Origin Energy, NSW Government, Baringa, Goldwind, EDF, Ausnet Services, CS Energy, Ausgrid, ExxonMobil, Clean Energy Regulator and many more.

Electricity Industry Fundamentals
A foundational grounding in how Australia’s National Electricity Market works, built for anyone who needs to get up to speed fast, whether or not they come from a technical background.
The course walks through the end-to-end design of the NEM and the forces reshaping it during the biggest transformation in its history. It covers:
- Different types of power stations (renewables, storage and fossil fuels) and their role in the energy transition
- How the wholesale market works, including ancillary services
- How risk is managed through contracts and derivatives
- Transmission and distribution networks
- Retail market
- System planning and energy policy at both a state and federal level
Participants leave able to speak the language of the industry and read its key data with confidence.
Best suited for: senior professionals entering the sector (including board members), as well as professionals in finance, legal, policy, government and corporate roles who work alongside the energy market and need a solid, practical grounding.

Commercial Opportunities for Battery Storage in the NEM
A focused, commercial deep-dive into how utility-scale battery storage makes money in the NEM and how to manage the risks around those revenues. The course examines:
- Revenue streams that make up a battery’s business case, including energy arbitrage, frequency control ancillary services (FCAS) and advanced grid services
- Trade-offs between battery technologies and project configurations (standalone versus hybrid, AC- versus DC-coupled)
- How contracts and offtake structures are used to firm up battery revenue and manage risk
- How state and federal policy shapes the investment case
Best suited for: project developers, investors, financiers, retailers, asset managers, supply-chain participants, and government wanting to build a commercial understanding of storage.
